Baritone Nicholas Hartley makes his LA Opera debut as Scientist #2 in the U.S. premiere of Howard Shore's The Fly. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from DePaul University and a Master of Music in Voice Performance from Southern Methodist University. He was a Company Artist for Ohio Light Opera for two seasons, and has sung in the young artist programs of San Diego Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Opera North and Brevard Music Center. A few favorite roles include Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos, Belcore in L'Elisir d'Amore and Dr. Pangloss in Candide. Mr. Hartley most recently sang Schlemil and Hermann in the Indianapolis Opera production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann. In addition, Mr. Hartley can be heard as Giuseppe on the critically acclaimed 2006 Albany Records recording of The Gondoliers. He recently completed his second season as a member of the San Diego Opera Ensemble, where he was selected as a Pearson Fellow, and performed the Second Villager in the mainstage production of Pagliacci.
